Media theorist, author, Team Human
New York City, USA
Douglas is flying the flag for Team Human, asking us to join, too.
Douglas Rushkoff is a media theorist and bestselling author, studying human autonomy in the age of machines. An early mover in the cyberpunk culture and advocate of open-source solutions to social problems, his recent work explores how to counterbalance the dynamics of what he calls the antihuman agenda of technologies, markets, and institutions. The latest of his twenty books is Team Human (2019), based on his popular podcast, in which he exposes how forces for human connection have turned into ones of isolation and repression, not least because of technology.
Named one of the “world’s ten most influential intellectuals” by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Douglas coined concepts such as “viral media,” “screenagers,” and “social currency”, and has been a leading voice for applying digital media toward social and economic justice.
He is a Research Fellow of the Institute for the Future, and founder of the Laboratory for Digital Humanism at CUNY/Queens, where he is a Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics. In addition, he is a columnist for Medium, and his novels and comics are all being developed for the screen.
At the House of Beautiful Business 2019, Douglas will be sharing his perspective with us via a live-streamed video.
