The New Politics of Business

With More in Common and BCG Henderson Institute

Thursday – Friday, July 14 – 15, 2022

5–6:30 p.m. CEST respectively

The business world’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has surprised many people. It’s been determined, aligned, and swift. But will it be the new standard when it comes to corporate statesmanship and ethics? From “culture wars” over wokeness, identity, and free speech, to human rights issues and the question of engaging or disengaging with authoritarian regimes—how political must and can companies be with their constituents? To what extent should they allow for open debate within the workplace? And is it enough to have a strong “purpose” and be “conscious” when the world seems to be falling apart—with climate change, rampant polarization, and democracies under assault?

In this Beautiful Business Trip, we’ll embark on an experiential learning journey through today’s new landscape of politics in and of business. Join us for an honest discussion about the role of business in society in hopes of collectively shaping a new playbook for responsible leadership in times of growing conflict.

With Ruth Ben-Ghiat, historian and author of Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present; Martina Larkin, formerly head of Europe and Eurasia at World Economic Forum and vice president of global issues at System, a U.S.–based technology company; Kristina Lunz, co-founder of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy; Kati Marton, award-winning journalist and author of The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel; and Martin Reeves, chairman of the BCG Henderson Institute.
